Championship Meet Historical 5th Place Times

 
When I was coaching, we sometimes had a hard time choosing our Championship Meet wildcards. The team's basic philosophy was to bring the "best", but who knew whether a Senior Girl shotputter with a season best throw of 21'1" was "better" that a Junior Boy 1200m runner with a PB of 4'24" or a JG with a 74.5 time in the 400m.  On occasion, other factors entered into the decision making process, but a yardstick to compare performances was missing .. so I started compiling 5th place performances at the Championship Meet, and for who knows what reason, kept the compilation alive after I retired from coaching ... after a while, though, I stopped tabulating the 50's since the times were always suspect. Anyway, the listing is provided below .. if it does nothing else, it does illustrate that things haven't really changed all that much in the last 20 years or so.

 ... btw, go with the Junior Boy .. :-)

p.s.   With good season records to back up the "bring the best" philosophy, and use of the following compilation, it was easy to respond to any parent's inquiry as to why their child wasn't selected for the Championship Meet Team .. forewarned, etc. ...
