The following program history from 1979 to 1996 was compiled by Ron Wrucke while he was involved with the program as an Assistant and Head Coach.  Vinny Meenan turned over all his Meet records dating back to 1973, which were subsequently entered into a computer data base for the compilation of the Top Five Record List.  It is known that Vinny Meenan was not the original coach of St. Mary's; it is believed that the program has its origins in the 60s!  The program has a proud history...

1979

Vinny Meenan was head coach (It is believed that Vinny started coaching in 1973?) and Tom Kelly was assistant coach.

1980

This was year Sr. Pat watched St. Mary's get beat in the first meet against St. Joes (Toms River) and talked all the 8th grade boys into going out for track. Championship Meet at St. Joes in Toms River. St. Mary's ended up in tie for first place with St. Joes. A. Pantaleo (unbeaten miler) never showed up to run. V. Meenan was head coach and T. Kelly was assistant coach.

1981

V. Meenan (head coach & SB) and T. Kelly (SG) "drafted" Bill Reith (JG) and Ron Wrucke (JB) to help coach - each group had a coach. Shannon Wrucke won Senior Girl MVP at Championship Meet. St. Mary's lost championship at Mater Dei by one point to St. Catharines (Spring Lake). This year, the "big schools" were separated from the "small schools".

1982

Vinny Meenan head coach; T. Kelly, Bill Reith and Ron Wrucke also coached. St. Ben's dropped out of league this year. St. Mary's had a very strong team and won the Championship Meet _ big schools only again - easily. The meet was held at Mater Dei.

1983

Vinny, Tom, Bill, and Ron continued as coaches. A short season - only three dual meets. Championship Meet held at Shore Regional, and ended in a downpour. All records lost but St. Mary's came in 1st as a team. The league went back to a north-south format this year; St. James dropped out _ but separate Championship Meets were held.

1984 (Registration = 84)

Vinny's last year as head coach. T. Kelly and R. Wrucke coached SG's and JB’s respectively while P. Wilkens took the JG's (Pete's 1st year). League split into north/south again but a combined Championship Meet was held. St. Mary's took fourth. Julia Hollander was SG-MVP.

1985 ("Returning" = 64, Registration = 67, "delta" = 3)

Vinny Meehan retired, and Ron Wrucke took over head coaching responsibilities as well as both SB and JB teams. T. Kelly came back to coach the SG's and P. Wilkens stayed with the JG's. League split into north/south but a combined Championship Meet was held. St. Mary's took 4th again.

1986 ("Returning" = 49, Registration = 70, "delta" = 21)

Tom Kelly retired - Ron Wrucke continued as head coach and P. Wilkens was the only Asst. Coach - Wilkens took the girls and Wrucke kept the boys. League was split N/S with combined Championship Meet. St. Mary's took 2nd place, but probably could have won if JB relay was broken up in favor of individual entries- however, they set Championship Meet and St. Mary's record (57.6). JB won group title and John Ritter was JB MVP. This was 1st year with Junior 1200.

1987 ("Returning" = 57, Registration = 77, "delta" = 20)

Good well-balanced team. Wrucke was head coach; Wilkens coached SG's and Theresa Walsh became JG coach. This was 1st year that St. Mary's had a cross country team and it had an obvious impact, especially with JG's. This was 1st year with pizza party and last year under St. Mary's Athletic Association. Dual meet MVP's were Christian Burke (JB), Eileen Dawson (JG), Brian Ruane (SB) and Michelle Midura (SG). League was N/S with combined Championship Meet; St. Marys won 1st., JG won group title - no MVP's.

1988 ("Returning" = 60, Registration = 89, "delta" = 29)

This was first year as school team. Another strong team, except for JB's. Wrucke, Wilkens & Walsh continued as coaches. Dual meet MVP's were Kyle Kennedy (JB), Colleen Todd (JG), Eddie Hackett (SB) and Cara Zinno (SG). League was N/S w/ combined Championship Meet. St. Marys won easily. JG won group title; Kim Rubino (JG) and Ed Hackett (SB) won MVP's.

1989 ("Returning" = 67, Registration = 103, "delta" = 36)

Best team in a long time - all groups very strong - no weaknesses except SB sprints were average. Wrucke/Wilkens/Waslh back and Rich Dalstrom coached the Junior Boys - four groups, four coaches - nice. Dual meet MVP's were Chris Stripto (JB), Michelle Knotz and Kathleen Marcotte (JG-tie), Kevin O'Hare (SB) and Kelly Dobson (SG). League was N/S w/ combined Championship Meet. St. Mary's won handily. Both JG and SG won group titles with over 50 points while Kathleen Marcotte (JG) and Cara Zinno (SG) won MVP's.

1990 ("Returning" = 66, Registration = 92, "delta" = 26)

Overall team strengh not as good as past several years but very strong at spots. JB's were weak - little strength and no depth. Wrucke, Wilkens, Walsh and Dalstrom all returned as coaches. League was a "mess" - this was year we experimented with developmental meets, relay carnival, and tri/quad meets because the little teams didn't want dual meets. No structure - we had to run against St. Catherines twice and only had three meets total plus the carnival. Dual meet MVP's were W. Veth (JB), A. Viggiano (JG), D. Laneve (SB), and C. Todd (SG). St. Mary's took second at the Championship Meet - we lost by 4.5 Points to St. Catharines. Both JG and SG won group titles. Kathleen Marcotte and Maureen Munday tied for SG MVP honors.

1991 ("Returning" = 68, Registration = 93, "delta" = 25)

A very strong team, but it took the coaches most of the year to realize how good it really was. The league continued with a developmental meet and relay carnival while we added a dual meet with St. Catharines and a tri-meet with St. Leo's and St. Ben's. Holy Cross was rained out and we couldn't reschedule it. This was Wrucke’s 11th year - Wilkens (8th year), Walsh (5th year) and Dalstrom (3rd year) all returned. Dual meet MVP's were W. Veth (JB), A. Viggiano (JG), C. Stripto (SB), and M. Munday (SG). We got back on the winning track at the Championship Meet by more than doubling the 2nd place score (187.5-82.5). All groups won except SB who lost by a single point. A. Viggiano won JG MVP while Marcotte and Munday shared SG MVP honors for the second year in a row.

1992 ("Returning" = 59, Registration = 76, "delta" = 17)

Although registration was down, especially Junior Girls, the team had good strength across the board and some of the best performers in St. Mary's history (e.g., A. Viggiano and K. Andrews). Wrucke (12 years), Wilkens (9th year), Walsh (6th year) and Dalstrom (4th year) all returned as coaches. The league continued with a developmental meet and relay carnival while dual meets with St. Catherines and St. Bens were also held. One more meet would help, but with Easter and Mother's Day off and an early Memorial Day, there just wasn't any time. Dual Meet MVP's were G. Eberhardt (JB), P. Storch (JG), M. Poole (SB), and L. Flood/A. Viggiano (SG). We won the Championship Meet 157-105.5 (St. Leo's) for the 2nd year in a row (5th time in six years). Like last year, all groups won except SB (the JB competition was basically tied three ways going into the 200 - we won). MVP's weren't awarded this year, but P. Storch "tripled"; R. Dobson and A. Viggiano also had outstanding performances.

1993 ("Returning" = 50, Registration = 88, "delta" = 38)

With only 50 participants on the "returning" roster, and with only 17 new faces showing up in 1992, there was some concern at the start of the season ... and then we had 38 new kids show up on the 1st weekend and the roster was healthy again. This year's team had 36 8th graders which means next year will be a worry again. Wrucke (13 years), Wilkens (10th year), Walsh (7th year), and Dalstrom (5th year) all returned as coaches. The league continued with a developmental meet and relay carnival - we are getting better at it. Wrucke kind of assumed League coordination with Treasury help from St. Leo's. We also had a dual meet with St. Catherine's and two Quad meets (they take a long time to run!). Dual meet MVP's were C. MacDonald and M. Halsey (JB), P. Storch (JG), T. Carroll (SB), A. Viggiano and K. Andrews (SG). We won the Championship Meet 164 - 75.5 (St. Leo's) for the 3rd year in a row (6th time in seven years). This year all groups won - Wrucke couldn’t remember that ever happening before?. Group trophies were awarded to C. MacDonald, E. Finkbohner (tied w/ P. Storch), T. Carroll and A. Viggiano.

1994 ("Returning" = 50, Registration = 114, "delta" = 64)

Having lost 36 - 8th graders last year and only 17 Juniors total returning - and most of the Junior Girls weren't all that active - there was concern again; for the second year in a row only 50 "returners. This year was amazing - 19 of the returners never did show - and the 1994 registration was 114. (45 Junior Girls!). Over 80 new faces came out for track - there were so many kids it was very difficult to run practices. Group time trials couldn’t be completed in the practice time slots, and how do you teach 45 Junior girls how to high jump?? Wrucke (14 years), Wilkens (11th year), Walsh (8th year), and Dalstrom (6th year) all returned as coaches although Dalstrom retired mid-season. Additional assistance was provided by Stan Werchinski, Jim Linquito, Bill Cullen and Kevin Scochil again. Wrucke continued League coordination with Trophy help from St. Leo's. In addition to the Developmental Meet and the Relay Carnival, we also had tri-meets with St. Catherines/St. Agnes (back in the league again) and St. Leo's/St. James; and a dual meet with St. Ben's. The dual meet win string now totals 64 in a row. Dual meet MVP's were K. Keller (JB), D. Reis (JG), R. Dobson (SB), and P. Storch (SG). We won the Championship Meet 131 - 93 (Holy Cross) for the 4th year in a row (7th time in eight years). This year only the Senior Girls won but the Junior Boys lost by only one point (Masterson fell in the 800). The Junior Girls also won 2nd while the Senior Boys finished 4th.

1995 ("Returning" = 94, Registration = 140, "delta" = 46 )

With 94 kids on the "returning" roster, the coaches were wondering at the start of the season what would happen registration-wise this year. The first practice had over 100 kids - it was a little scary. Coach Wrucke took the senior boys & girls to the far side of the track to work on relays, put 6 kids on a team, and had over 12 teams - they couldn’t fit on the track! "No-Shows" from the carry-over roster totaled 26, so 72 participants were new to the program. The team was actually too big to really coach - time trials and field event practices were held on an individual group basis, we ran to Garrett a lot, and things worked out once we got used to the size of the team. Wrucke (15 years), Wilkens (12th year) and Walsh (9th year) returned and Jim Linquito took over as coach of the Junior Boys. Additional assistance was provided by K. Scochil and Kelly Ashe. In addition to the Developmental Meet and the Relay Carnival, we also had tri-meets with St. Leo’s/St. Catherine’s, St. Ben’s/St. James, Holy Cross/St. James, and St. Ben’s/St. Agnes. The team went undefeated, actually outscoring the total of both competing teams in all meets, and the "dual-meet" winning streak now is up to 72. Dual meet MVP's were K. D’Ambrosio (JB), J. Ambruzs (JG), B. Marsh (SB), and P. Storch (SG). We won the Championship Meet 158 - 87 (Holy Cross) for the 5th year in a row (8th time in nine years). This year all groups won except the Senior boys who lost by 3 points (they dropped the baton in the relay).

1996 ("Returning" = 93, Registration =, "delta" = )

Wrucke retired and Jim Linquito took over as head coach. Pete Wilkens (13th year) continued to serve as assistant coach.

As of the start of the 2002 season, Jim has decided to retire and Pete has taken over as Head Coach (19th year!!).
